| One of the first two buildings that will make up a New Education City in Qatar, the College of Medicine is a 339,000sf two-story reinforced concrete building. The primary structure is a one way concrete beam and joist system. The most influential factor in the selection of reinforced concrete is the local availability and expertise. The building houses teaching and research laboratories, classrooms, faculty offices, seminar rooms, and four major lecture halls. The lecture halls are geodetic shapes (an icosahedrons, a dodecahedron, and two ovoids) fabricated in structural steel. Other unique elements of the design in addition to the lecture halls include several monumental stairs, wind towers, fountains and an opti wall system utilizing a combination of glass block and masonry to create interplay of light patterns. | |
