St. James Hospital

Architect: Perkins and Will
Location: Olympia Fields, Illinois

At 150,000 square feet, this hospital addition is the lynchpin of a master plan that incorporates five distinct service functions into one unified campus.  Built with an eye toward the future, the structural system consists of composite slabs on a steel frame, which offers the utmost in flexibility for renovation and expansion.  The basement of the addition contains a four-bay loading dock accessible to full sized trailer trucks.  To allow for entry and maneuverability into this space, four transfer plate girders—each over 50” deep—are used to permit the omission of several columns.

Connecting this addition to the other areas of the campus is a two-story “spine.”  Fully glazed, this 600 foot long “main street” is the primary campus circulation space and point of entry.  Two similar canopies that demark the entry areas along the spine are distinctively designed with a horizontal curtain wall system supported on exposed structural steel frames.
