Northwestern University Tennis Center Addition
ARCHITECT: PHN Architects
LOCATION: Evanston, IL
Two new buildings connected to the existing tennis gymnasium/natatorium complex. One of the buildings is a 24,000 sf Basketball Gymnasium with an elevated 6,400 sf running track. The second building is a 14,400 sf Tennis Gymnasium with 6,600 sf of support spaces on two levels. There is also new upper level seating and mechanical spaces within the existing Tennis Gymnasium, totaling approximately 8,200 sf. The structural system consists of long-span joists, spanning between precast walls, and a composite slab at the mezzanine/track level. Challenges included creating new openings through existing precast walls; pour soil conditions (sand); and limiting the extents of demolition of an existing building on the site.
